Data Briefs

Data Briefs are short summaries and comparisons of the data in the NCS Archive. The briefs help highlight specific data resources that are available to interested researches. The data described in these briefs is available in detail to interested researchers with approved Archive research requests.

Title Description
Breastfeeding and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in the National Children's Study (PDF - 1.5MB) This report provides an example of the use of the NCS Archive data for pediatrics research, in this case an exploratory examination of the association between breastfeeding of infants and risk of later development of autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
Breastfeeding in U.S. Infants - How NCS and CDC NIS Data Compare (PDF - 1.4 MB) A comparison of the NCS infant feeding data with infant feeding data from the Center for Disease Control's National Immunization Survey (NIS). National Children's Study (NCS) collected breastfeeding data from over 3,000 mothers using the 6-Month Infant Feeding Self-Administered Questionnaire (SAQ) during 2011-2013. NCS results on ever breastfed and breastfeeding at 6-month were compared to similar data in the NIS by race/ethnicity, maternal education levels, maternal age at birth, poverty income ratio, marital status, metropolitan vs. non-metropolitan, and receipt of Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC).
Physical Measures among Children in the National Children's Study (PDF - 1.4 MB) A summary of the anthropometric and blood pressure measurement data collected from birth to the child's 36-month visit during the National Children's Study. As well as a comparator anthropometric reference data from the 2011-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).
Risk Factors Affecting Maternal Health and Pregnancy Collected in the NCS Vanguard Study (PDF - 1.4MB) This report provides the sample sizes and the percent's of participants for different health risk factor during at least one of their prenatal or pregnancy visits.
